Bristol-based Wiper and True are welcoming applications from anyone who identifies as a woman or non-binary person, and is keen to explore brewing and the beer industry.
Ahead of International Women’s Day this year on March 8th, local independent brewery Wiper and True are setting out to try and address the widely acknowledged gender imbalance in the beer industry. Established in 2012 by three friends, the St Werburghs-based business is inviting applications from anyone who identifies as a woman or non-binary person, and who is keen to explore a career in brewing or the beer industry to come for a day’s work experience in the brewery.
The chosen two people will spend a day working with the Wiper and True team brewing one of the company’s popular beers, and experiencing daily life in a fast-paced brewery. Wiper and True are keen to make the opportunity accessible to everyone, and so can cover expenses up to £150 per person to cover travel and a place to stay in Bristol before or after the brewday, should applicants require this.
Speaking about the work experience opportunity, Wiper and True’s Marketing Manager Alice Howells said:
“It’s no secret that craft beer remains a heavily male-dominated world, and for many women this makes gaining industry experience and access a challenge. Within Wiper and True, we have significantly more employees who identify as men than women or non-binary. This International Women’s Day our team wants to take small, practical steps towards improving this imbalance. We know this opportunity won’t fix all the problems around sexism, stereotypes and inclusivity in beer, but we hope that it will give a couple of people the chance to look behind the scenes into an industry they are interested in working in.We see this year as a pilot scheme, and if the trial day is useful to our applicants this year we have exciting plans to roll out a broader work experience offering programme our business next year.”
What to expect on a Wiper and True brewday
Brewdays at Wiper and True start early, at 8am sharp, and last all day. The chosen candidates will be expected to arrive shortly before 8am for a team briefing, and to get into safety gear (safety boots and glasses – which Wiper and True will provide). The Wiper and True team will then guide you through the full brewing process of making a Wiper and True beer, getting you involved as much as possible. You will also be guided through the process of canning beer, including a short stint working on the canning line Please note that brewing includes working at heights to access some equipment, working in confined spaces, and working in both cold and hot environments. It’s recommended that you wear older clothes which you don’t mind getting dirty or wet, and bring a water bottle and snacks – it’s tiring work! If you’d like, some of the Wiper and True team will be around on the day to have lunch with you – or there are plenty of great options for food within walking distance from our brewery.
How to apply & timeline
If you’re interested in applying to be considered for Wiper and True’s work experience opportunity, complete this short application form by 9am on Monday 7th February. Wiper and True will contact the selected two applicants on or before Friday 11th February.
By completing the form, you confirm that you identify as a woman or non-binary person, you are over 18 years old, and that you are available for the full brewday on Tuesday 8th March. You will need to take a negative lateral flow test on the morning of the brewday.
