Cronk is good…Cronk is the drink

A Canadian researcher has lit the spark to bring back an old time soft drink – Cronk – which a Calgary brewery is now making and getting flooded with orders and demand.

Paul Fairie was looking at an 1882 copy of The Calgary Herald when he spotted at ad that read: “Cronk is good…Buy Cronk…Cronk is the drink.”

“I just seemed so modern,” said Fairie. “Not at all like ads in other cities at the time.”

Blake Belding, head brewer at Cold Garden, says that the recipe for the 120-year-old drink contains sassafras, sarsparilla, hops, chamomile, cinnamon, ginger, green tea and molasses. He suspects it will taste like a root beer with a spicy kick, along with a 3-4% ABV kick as well.

The first 800-litre batch should be ready in two weeks times and is pretty much already sold out, with buyers in Canada, the USA, and the UK clamoring for Cronk.

The first known mention of the drink is from 1840 in an advert from Syracuse, New York. It is believed that Warren Cronk invented the drink when he was 25.

No one is sure why Cronk disappeared, but some suspect a depression in the late 1800s spelled the end of Cronk.
