Turning Point Brew Co of Knaresborough and London-based Five Points Brewing Company have teamed up to celebrate the legacy of heritage beer.
While the beer industry is currently experiencing – in some regard – a boom with an unprecedented variety of beer styles available, there is an undeniable renewed consumer appreciation for traditional beers alongside the newer iterations.
Pubs have seen cask beer grow again in popularity with demand leaning to sessionable ABVs and classic British styles. The 2024 SIBA Independent Beer Report sites a +10% year-on-year growth in cask production from small brewers since 2020. Many previously keg-only craft brewers are also bringing cask beer into their repertoire over the last 2 years.
Co-founder of Turning Point, Aron Mcmahon, hunted out an 1895 Rose’s recipe from archives – a now long defunct brewery from Malton (North Yorkshire), where he was working at the time. Knowing that bringing such a recipe back to life required more than simply brewing the beer, he contacted Five Points.
“We were thrilled to brew these two distinct examples of the same style,” said Greg Hobbs, Co-founder and Director of Brewing at Five Points.
“Brewing historical beers with modern ingredients is a fantastic way to keep our brewing heritage alive. These two Milds, inspired by recipes a century apart, celebrate the tradition of British brewing and the change in beer drinkers’ tastes over the years.”

With the two breweries in partnership, Turning Point will brew the Rose’s recipe, and Five Points will brew another Mild inspired by recipes written 100 years later in 1995. While these beers can be enjoyed separately, the fundamental idea is for them to be had side by side – for drinkers to either compare or contrast or just enjoy together.
The intention is to celebrate not only the importance of beer heritage and its historic roots, but also its development, dynamism, and never-ending evolution. These beers are both in tribute and celebration of both the old and the new.
The beers will launch at Five Points and Turning Point venues on 24th April to coincide with CAMRA’s initiative “Mild In May”, after which they will be available at pubs and festivals across the country, and from each brewery’s respective webshops.
