Brewers in India will be glad to see 2019 behind them and can only hope that 2020 will prove better for craft breweries.
According to The Economic Times, for the first time in a decade India’s 170 microbreweries are seeing sales drop. This is being caused by a range of problems, including: ‘dry days’ during elections; a prolonged monsoon, and an overall economic slump forcing consumers to cut down on spending.
Competition from India’s big players has intensified as well. United Breweries, which makes Kingfisher, and Anheuser-Busch InBev already control the lion’s share of the market. Now they’re producing their own version of imitation craft beers. But, even some of these players aren’t immune to the slump. UB has seen a decline in sales while Carlsberg, which had been experiencing double digit growth has seen a drop of five percent.
